ZINA’S WORRIED EYES DASHED across him when he appeared in front of her. She’d been sitting in the front parlor muttering over some papers, her shades were drawn, masking the afternoon sun, but as soon as he appeared, she jumped up, curved around her desk, and examined his battle weathered face and shabby ass appearance.

He probably looked like hell, but he felt… good—no, great. No, alive. Even close to death, mind ripped to shreds, he felt as light and airy as a feather on the wind.

“What the hell happened to you?” Her soft hands grazed his face, her gaze sharp.

“She gave me her number, Z,” he grinned, holding out his phone as though he’d just won all the prizes. Fuck, it felt like it. He felt as if he’d won the damn lottery, given the cheat code to restore order to Clide, and all his enemies had been vanquished.

“Are you drunk?” She eyed the two guards flanking him.

“Better.” The feeling running through him was amazing. His neck still tingled where Dani left her mark on him. He subconsciously reached for it, but Zina swatted his hand away. She grabbed his chin and moved it to the side, eyeing the marks Dani’s fangs left behind. Her face soured.

“Where is she?”

“Z…” he sighed.

“Let me guess, you have a handle on it?”

“Z, she saved my life.”

“Doesn’t look like it,” she hmphed. A spark of her magic scorched the side of his neck, healing the marks before he could tell her not to. He wanted her marks on him. He held in a groan as the fire of her magic blazed across his skin, but Zina’s warm eyes, stricken with worry, noticed his body sway and partially slump against a console table behind him. After a quick gasp, she twisted to her guards. “Bring him to the back room.”

Fuck, he hated that sentence, knowing the fiery pain that was about to follow, but what she said next made his bones go cold.

“And when you’re done, bring me the vampire responsible for these marks.”

“Don’t,” he said to the guards, who each tucked a hand under his armpits to steady him.

Goran and Innis shared bewildered looks, unsure of which order to follow. They knew not to go against a Prominent. Hell, they were her personal guard, bound to serve at her request. Yet, he was their leader, who demanded nothing but their respect. The two of them looked ready to explode because of their indecision. He turned to Zina.

“Z,” he said impatiently, when their bodies locked in confusion.

“As he says,” she acquiesced with a disapproving sigh. Zina was worried, plain and simple. “You’d better have a good explanation for this. Take him to the back.”

On their mist, the guards raced him to the back room of his nightmares. Moments later, Zina entered and told them to leave. When the door sealed behind her, his elation died down. His stomach knotted and for a moment, he wished Dani was here to soothe him while Zina’s magic ripped him apart in order to put him back together.
